He studied composition under Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and received the Dutch cultural award “Het Gouden Viooltje” (The Golden Violin Award) in 2015. His free compositional style, unbound by the conventions of contemporary music, has earned him high acclaim, and his works have been performed by artists such as Jacob Kreitzberg, Lucas Foss, Gert Albrecht, and Vasily Petrenko. “The Gift of Song” for two pianos is one of Frances’s most distinctive works—a monumental piece of minimalist piano music lasting approximately 50 minutes. Ralph van Raad, a master performer of modern and contemporary music, plays both Piano 1 and Piano 2, masterfully bringing to life a majestic and fantastical world.
