It brings together, all in one collection, the pieces that the hugely popular Babo Lark has loved to perform—such as during concert encores—and for which there have been numerous requests for a CD release. Babo Lark is simply having a blast performing with this 15-piece ensemble. It’s astonishing to hear those intricate flute passages from Piazzolla’s masterpiece *The History of the Tango* rendered on the French horn—yet the performance is so natural and nuanced that you might mistake it for the original. The accompanying ensemble is also exquisite. It’s also a delight to hear Lev Kogan’s (1927–2007) “Hasidic Melodies,” a piece steeped in Jewish tradition that caused quite a stir when performed in Japan. The timbre, reminiscent of folk instruments, is nothing short of miraculous, drawing the listener into a mystical world. In Fauré’s “Pavane,” he displays expressive power rivaling that of a renowned singer, and finally, he delivers a thrilling 13-minute-and-40-second rendition of Ravel’s “Boléro.” It makes you realize once again just how incredible the French horn can be.
