With her fourth album, You Are Spring!, Tasha fully embraces a gentle, intricate chamber folk in line with both the records seasonal title and lyrics that strive to see the glass as half full. Written during her unexpected run on Broadway in Sufjan Stevens Illinoise, it was partly inspired by her relocation from Chicago to New York as well as by broader socio-political and ecological turbulence. The album begins with an injection of the pure, pastel-shaded warmth and tenderness that is "Spring," a brief a cappella tune with three-part harmonies by Tasha, Jamila Woods, and LRain. The records sentiments are captured in its opening lines: "Dont die now/Theres life to be found now/Green grass grows/Spring trees put on a big show/Hold fast to/Some dream that astounds you/Like freedom/Like freedom." Named for a Pennsylvania town near the midway point of her drives between New York and Chicago, "Clarion," a dreamy indie pop track with a softly skipping drum rhythm, finds her embracing change that could be for the good. On the elegant acoustic guitar song "Lucky," which gradually adds bass, light percussion, airy backing vocals, and strings, she counts her blessings despite a faltering romance. While many of the albums tracks are, like these, brushed with the chance that things could fall apart, the tone is darker on songs including "Ending," a melancholy, piano-based entry with woodwind accents that feels the weight of impending climate collapse and further loss of freedoms ("What if nothing else was left/But a hollow guilt/For not doing better"). Livelier but also cautionary with its centering of the supertonic, "Actor" examines relationships that merely go through the motions. But even songs such as the latter two and the bittersweet "Summer" take comfort in possibility, gratitude, and the albums timbral softness. You Are Spring! ends with its most angular, percussive track, the episodic "Quick!," which warns against complacency before taking in the dawn of a new day. ~ Marcy Donelson
