Description:

An Ethiopian nun pianist with a post-classical/ambient sensibility conveys spirituality through piano, organ, and harmonium! This album contains all the recordings from "Church of Kidane Mehret", a private pressing of a record by an Ethiopian nun pianist, Emahoui Tsegaye Mariam Gobleu, who also has a post-classical/ambient sensibility, as well as two previously unreleased tracks. The album contains all the material from "Church of Kidane Mehret", a record that Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gobru left behind in a private press in 1972, and two previously unreleased songs. Church of Kidane Mehret" can be simply described as an Emahoui interpretation of Ethiopian Orthodox music. Recorded in churches throughout Jerusalem, the record is groundbreaking in that it features Emahoi's direct involvement with the Ethiopian Orthodox liturgy, not only on the piano, which is a moving experience, but also on the harmonium and the huge bass pipe organ, a rare performance. The previously released "Ave Maria," one of the label's favorite tracks, carefully captures the chime-like piano she plays as it echoes off the ancient stone walls. Emma Hoy's signature melody line is also given a fresh sound on "Spring Ode - Meskerem," played on harmonium. The stately organ playing on the record's two B-sides is also very interesting, combining the disciplined chants of Western classical music with a lifetime of research into Ethiopian religious music. Among these, the unique Emahoy's musicality is most evident in "Essay on Mahlet". This is an extremely meditative piece in which Emma Hoy interprets a free verse poem from the Orthodox liturgy note by note on the piano. It was originally released on the 1963 self-produced Der Sang Des Meeres, along with the dramatic piano piece "The Storm," and was restored from an ultra-rare record of which only 50 copies were made without jackets at the time. It was rescued from the trash by a fellow nun at Emma Hui's funeral in March 2023. The CD comes with a 24-page booklet with liner notes by Emma Hoy scholar Thomas Fenn.
