In1970,MotownanditsGordyandTamlasubsidiariesissuedacoupledozenalbums,PsychedelicShack,ABC,DianaRoss,andSigned,SealedandDeliveredamongthem.ShelvedthatyearwasSunnyandWarm,intendedasthefirstsoloLPcreditedtoBlinky,anOaklandnativewhohadsignedtotheparentlabelafterperformingandrecordingwithAndraeCrouchsCogicsandcuttingsologospelmaterial(underbirthnameSondraWilliams)forVee-JayandAtlantic.MovementstowardSunnyandWarmbeganwiththe1968releaseofIWouldntChangetheManHeIs,writtenandproducedbyAshford&Simpson.TheballadwaseffectiveindemonstratingthemightandrangeofBlinkyschurch-bredvoice--moregritthanglamour,closertoMarthaReevesthantoDianaRoss--butitwassecond-tierbyAshford&Simpsonsstandard,withlyricsthatseemedexcessivelytolerantvoicedbyasingerwhosoundedanythingotherthanmeek.Itdidnotchart.AduetsalbumwithEdwinStarr,JustWeTwo,farednobetterthenextyear,presagingthecancellationofSunnyandWarm.Almost50yearslater,theentiretyofthatLPispresentedforthefirsttimeonthistwo-disccompilationfromthedutifulRealGoneMusic.ThisManofMine,amoresuitablenumberwrittenandproducedbyClayMcMurray,surfacedasaB-sidein1973(scheduledtobeononeoftwoother[!]abandonedBlinkyLPs),andsomeothercuts,suchasthemostpotentversionofJimmyWebbssorrowfulThisTimeLastSummer,wereincludedonvolumesofCellarfulofMotownandTheCompleteMotownSingles.Theseandthepreviouslyunreleasedrecordings--includingadurableifunnecessaryrollthroughFontellaBassChesshitRescueMe,oneoftheslowerandmorebeltingtakesofForOnceinMyLife,andthecharmingIsThereaPlace(InHisHeartforMe),subsequentlywaxedbytheSupremesandGladysKnight&thePips--amounttoadecentfull-lengthanysmallerlabelwouldhavebeenproudtocirculate.TheremainderofthefirstdisccontainstherestofBlinkys1972and1973sidesforMotownandMoWestandhercontributionstoLadySingstheBluesandothercontemporaneousMotowncompilations.Theseconddiscisfilledtocapacitywithnewlyreleased,mostlyrawereffortswithalittlestudiochatter.Theresminimaloverlapwiththetracksheardonthetwo-partMotownUnreleased1968.MotownfanaticsshouldbedelightedtohearBlinkyrenderingsofmaterialthatwenttothesingersvariouslabelmates,interspersedwithcoversofsongswrittenand/orpopularizedbytheYardbirds,RollingStones,Beatles,andJamesTaylor.Nodoubtamajorundertaking,thesetfinallypresentsaclearpictureofBlinkysunderrepresentedworkfrom1968-1973,justbeforesheachievedmusicalimmortalitywiththethemeforGoodTimes.~AndyKellman
