Description:
This is the debut album by Harriet Cliffe, a young cellist born in 1991. Born in the Netherlands, she began taking cello lessons at age 5 and enrolled in the Utrecht School of the Arts at age 9, where she steadily developed her talent. In 2004, she moved to Austria to further her studies at the University of Vienna. She has, of course, won numerous prizes at competitions; most recently, she took first place at the Antonio Janigro International Competition held in Croatia, as well as the Audience Award and the Janigro Prize. This album features a French-inspired program, highlighted by Franck’s Sonata, and is a tasteful recording that fully showcases her exceptional technique and delicate sensibility. In particular, Offenbach’s short piece “Jacqueline’s Tears” is exquisite. She plays a historic instrument crafted by Hendrik Jacobs in 1690, on loan from a Dutch foundation, and the beautiful tone—which fully harnesses the instrument’s expressive power—captivates the listener from start to finish.
