Having sung of the straightforward emotions of a young man in “The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter” (C5044), Bére now sings of the slightly more complex heart of a young man in Schumann’s (1810–1856) “The Poet’s Love.” Bele and Bjelan weave together emotions that defy words as the piano and voice intertwine in intricate harmony. Moments that bring home the complexity and beauty of Schumann’s art songs are scattered throughout the program. The Schubert (1797–1828) art songs that open the program are also as beautiful as jewels. The highlight is “The Shepherd on the Rock,” enhanced by Miles on the clarinet. Although originally written for soprano, when Bäre sings it, she masterfully conveys the shepherd’s subtle sadness, bringing tears to the listener’s eyes. Naxos Japan
