Russian art songs offer a worldview entirely distinct from that of German lieder. They touch the listener’s heart directly and stir up deeply simple emotions. Tchaikovsky’s sweet longing, Rachmaninoff’s poignant melancholy tinged with pain, the sound of the wind sweeping through Rimsky-Korsakov’s songs, and Mussorgsky’s gentle caress. These exquisitely beautiful songs certainly seem to possess a maddening charm. Performing here are the Kushpula twin sisters. Zoliana, a mezzo-soprano, and Olena, a pianist—both were born in Ukraine and received their first musical instruction from their mother.
