Description:
This is a festive cantata composed by Haydn in 1768, when he was 36 years old. It was written for the 50th anniversary celebration of the monastic vows of the Abbot of Zwettl. Since Haydn was unable to attend the premiere due to other commitments, he apparently sent the performers and singers detailed instructions consisting of 10 points. The work features a Latin libretto that abstractly depicts the debate between the four cardinal virtues and theology, with five singers each performing a distinct role. The music is highly engaging, featuring brilliant arias and intricate orchestral ensembles throughout. Although the score originally calls for a “sinfonia” as the overture, it is not performed in this live recording; instead, the work begins immediately with a soprano recitative.
