This is one of the first films about the Mafia, in which the fight is doomed because "the polyp's feelers" reach everything and everyone. A police captain and a deputy prosecutor try to prove that the city's construction magnate is part of a legendary crime syndicate. Liz Ortolani's innovative score is not based on an idealized traditional mafia (which Nino Rota would portray a year later in "The Godfather"), but on the fast, modern rhythms of the bustling extension of depopulated Palermo.Between pop, jazz, and funk, the music is an aggressive and realistic metropolitan showcase. Ortolani uses an omnipresent main theme that emphasizes the narrative like a repeated echo. However, a succession of melodic variations, short notes, and modulations create an increasingly rarefied atmosphere. The electric guitars distort, the strings are strangely tuned, and the winds and keyboards stir unease. Ortolani's score was released on LP by RCA and reissued on vinyl a few years ago by Four Flies Records; in the 1990s, the same LP program combined with NELLA STRETTA MORSA DEL RAGNO appeared on the digital market, followed by the GDM CD Club released an expanded version. Returning to the original stereo master tapes, supervised by Claudio Fuiano and mastered by Chris Malone, this new edition includes every note recorded by Ortolani for the film in 1971, making it the most comprehensive of this classic Italian score edition.The booklet includes an essay by Miguel Angel Ordonez on film, music, and composers.
