Description:
Gluck's ballet music Savard portrays Don Juan! Gluck is famous for his operatic reforms ("Orfeo e Euridice", 1762), but he also "reformed" ballet music. He also created two ballets based on Molière's plays, "Don Juan" and "Semiramis," both of which were premiered in Vienna. These two ballets were innovative in that they were structured around a coherent storyline, and their music utilized all the instruments and elements of the orchestra in the presentation of the scenes. Jordi Savard and the Concert des Nations colorfully reconstructed the elements that Gluck put into sound, and the dancers are a sight to behold. The dancers are also represented as if on fire, as is the licentiousness of Don Juan. We are reminded once again that Gluck was a shining light on the European stage, both in opera and ballet.
