Savard's ASTREE debut disc. A beautiful, rich, and horrifying collection of viols by F. Coupland, recorded in 1975, Savard's ASTREE debut disc is a great masterpiece. Originally, a series of Savard's recordings were released on the ASTREE label (later, Savard himself launched ALIA VOX and released new recordings as well as an LP edition of F. Coupland's Viols, the great masterpiece of Savard's ASTREE debut, recorded in 1975. Its sound, which the late Tetsuo Nagaoka famously described as "number one in thickness, abrasiveness, and luster, sometimes to the point of being insistent," is also a major attraction. Savard, who was in his early thirties at the time, and two other virtuoso players of the same generation give a wonderful performance filled with a sense of tension. The "Viols" (1728) is a work from the last years of Couperin's life. The year 1728 was also the year of the death of Marin Marais, who was considered one of the best viol players at the Court of Couperin, along with Follecre. It is interesting to note that he continued to play the bass de viol even in his later years, but it is also possible that Coupland was paying homage to a tradition that was already dying out at the time. The first suite consists of seven pieces and has a nostalgic character, written in the French style. The beauty of the gavotte movement, for example, is so beautiful that it makes one shudder. The magnificent passacaille (or chaconne) at the end is nothing short of magnificent. The second suite consists of four pieces, and this one is rather Italianate. The third piece, "Funeral," is a masterpiece filled with serene tension. The final piece, "White Shirt," is an immaculate piece, requiring superb technique.Savard, and Copeman and Moretto's superb performance, is remarkable! Again, Manuel Mojino, an engineer well-known for his work on ALIA VOX's SACD Hybrid series, has mastered the recording here as well (originally, Savard was active in recording on the ASTREE label, but after Savard himself launched ALIA VOX, (Originally, Savall was recording for the ASTREE label, but since Savall himself launched ALIA VOX, he has been releasing new recordings on the ALIA VOX label, while at the same time transferring the sound sources from his ASTREE days).
