Description:

A hot night at Sonny Stitt's in Baltimore, 1973! Previously unreleased one-horn recording of a live concert for members of the Left Bank Jazz Society at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore, Maryland on November 11, 1973, featuring Kenny Barron (p), Sam Jones (b) and Lewis Hayes (ds). Previously unreleased recordings of saxophone master Sonny Stitt capturing a concert for members of the "Left Bank Jazz Society" at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore, Maryland on November 11, 1973 are now available! Recorded by Vernon Welsh, founder of "The Left Bank Society," an organization founded to make jazz music more accessible, "Boppin' in Baltimore" is the first official release of this work with the cooperation of Sonny Stitt's estate. A one-horn quartet work featuring an all-star rhythm section of Kenny Barron (p), Sam 0. Jones (b), and Lewis Hayes (ds), it was recorded in 1973, but the previous year, 1972, saw the release of Stitt's big hit, "Tune-Up! Cobblestone)" had been released the previous year. This live performance in Baltimore is a performance of Stitt at the peak of his powers, with his forceful alto saxophone playing. A Different Blues" and "Stella By Starlight" also feature Stitt's tenor playing. The songs on this album are all familiar favorites, and you can enjoy the heated and lengthy performance that only a live show can offer. The excellent backing by Kenny Barron and others is also noteworthy. The English booklet includes rare photos by Christian Rose, Raymond Ross, Tom Copi, Bert Goldblatt, and others. Liner notes by jazz critic Bob Blumenthal, interviews with Kenny Barron, Lewis Hayes, and contemporary saxophone icon Charles McPherson, Muse Records founder and producer Don Schlitten, and Canadian Mark Vasey's Canada's Mark Vasey conducted an archival interview with Sonny Stitt himself in the early 1970s. The realistic enthusiasm of the time and the audience's response to the wonderful performances are captured in high sound quality.
