La Cucaracha Brass' album of the same name is a compilation of the late 1960s, a time when New York's Latin scene was exploding with energy, and this album is a true breath of fresh air! Produced by Bobby Marin, who led the Nuyorican movement and was the producer behind many great albums by Louie Ramirez, Joe Cuba, Charlie Palmieri, and many others. This album is a re-edited version of Raphie Martinez & The National Combo's "Cool Man" (Mary Lou 1002) under the direction of Ismael Maisonave's Mary Lou Records. The album includes descarga, guaracha, guaguancó, and boogaloo. The heat of the "transitional period" just before the birth of salsa is here. The trumpets, congas, and timbales are in the foreground, and the sharpness of the horns and the speed of the rhythm section intermingle in a sound that can be described as the prototype of the New York Latin music that would later lead to the golden age of salsa. The title "Cucaracha Brass" was given in honor of the popularity of Tijuana Brass at the time, but behind the title is the "sound of the scene" of unknown session musicians who were simultaneously experiencing the end of the boogaloo and the birth of salsa. It is light, rough, and dazzlingly raw. This is another important document by Bobby Marin that allows us to experience the turning point of Latin New York.
