A Collection of Works by Johann Christoph Bach, the Most Important Composer in the Bach Family Prior to J.S. Bach Johann Christoph Bach was the son of Heinrich Bach, the younger brother of J.S. Bach’s grandfather (Christoph Bach). He is regarded as the greatest composer in the Bach family prior to J.S. Bach. J.S. Bach referred to Johann Christoph Bach as a “profound musician” (“The Origins of the Bach Family”) and was greatly influenced by him. While he was primarily active as an organist and harpsichordist, he also left behind a substantial body of vocal works. While the vocal parts are not overly complex—due to the technical limitations of the ensemble he conducted at the time—the instrumental parts are correspondingly rich and substantial. This live recording, made in April 2009 during a concert titled “Six Funerals and Weddings,” features two arias, two laments, two motets, and two dialogues. “My Friend, You Are Beautiful” was performed as part of a wedding celebration. It is a charming and beautiful piece reminiscent of a duet between the bride and groom. Gardiner delivers a brilliant performance of this masterpiece, which once again demonstrates the true depth of the Bach family’s talent. King International
