Brahms (1833-1897)

Description:

Gardiner's second recording of the "German Requiem" Gardiner's second recording of the "German Requiem" is a re-recording of the German Requiem, which he recorded in 1990, and which is now being re-recorded some 20 years later, and is a masterpiece of the chorus of the Monteverdi Chorus, which has worked together on many of Brahms's symphonies and other works. The world woven by the well-crafted tone of the Orchestre Revolutionnelle et Romantique and the splendid chorus of the Monteverdi Chorus, which is also full of soldiers, is a masterpiece. The gentle opening of the fourth piece, "How lovable, where art thou, O Lord of hosts," and the flowing music that follows brought tears to my eyes, and the intense wind instruments and chorus in the sixth piece, "Here we are, without earth and without earth," were both a marvel of technical excellence. The German Requiem is said to reflect Brahms's personal and unwavering religious views.Brahms himself was baptized as a Lutheran, and the text is from a Lutheran bible, and there is no mention of the word "Christ" or "resurrection," and the requiem is more a consolation to those living in the present rather than a requiem for the repose of the souls of the dead. Schütz's works included here show similarities to the German Requiem in the choice of text and the way the music is attached to the text, which shows how well Brahms studied Schütz. It will be interesting to see how Gardiner will present this great Romantic work, which strongly reflects Brahms' personal religious views, and at the same time has some ancient aspects reminiscent of Schütz's music, in his second recording of the work.
