Presented by “La Compagnia del Madrigale”—a dream team of Latin vocal ensembles formed in Italy by core members of Concerto Italiano and La Venexiana—this is the “Volume 1 of Madrigals for Five Voices” by Luca Marenzio (c. 1553–1599), the genius composer of the late madrigal period! Active primarily in Rome during the 16th century, Marenzio enjoyed immense popularity as he produced a steady stream of original madrigals with the patronage of nobles and cardinals. Published in 1580, “Book 1 of Madrigals for Five Voices” consists of works from his youth that marked the beginning of his career as a madrigal composer. It is a masterpiece that showcases his powerful five-voice harmonies, rich timbre, painterly color, and exceptional artistry. Furthermore, the collection *Dolciaffetti*, a collaborative work by Nannino, Moscaglia, de Mac, Soriano, Zoilo, and Marenzio, reveals the high standard of “Roman music” of the time and offers a feast of extraordinary talent.
