An oratorio by Stradella, who led a life full of ups and downs! The long-awaited revival of Alessandro Stradella’s (1639–1682) oratorio “Susanna”—the first exclusive release on Glossa featuring Enrico Gatti, Italy’s “god of the Baroque violin”! Stradella is known for his tumultuous life, which included being banished from Venice due to a scandal involving his relationship with a woman linked to a cardinal, as well as embezzling funds from the Roman Catholic Church. His achievements as a musician were remarkable; in his brief 37-year life, he left an immeasurable legacy for posterity, including technically sophisticated concertos for ensemble and the establishment of opera, in which arias and recitatives were clearly distinguished. This oratorio from Stradella’s later years is based on the apocryphal story of “Daniel and Susanna” from the Old Testament. It is a monumental work that in some ways mirrors the composer’s own life, and Gatti delivers a superb performance brimming with refined sound. Tokyo M-Plus
