The fifth release (sixth if counting Verard’s solo album) from the masters of medieval and Renaissance music, Dominique Verard and the Ensemble Gilles Banshoa, on the Glossa label is “Songs of the Medieval Troubadours.” The Ensemble Gilles Vanchois presents “Medieval Songs”—songs once performed by troubadours and trouvères in various settings, from the courts and villages of Occitania (a region centered on southern France where the Occitan language is spoken) to Spain—using a simple combination of vocals, the oud, the columner, and the zarb—a simple combination of traditional and ancient folk instruments—to present music that deeply touches the heart. Dominique Verard, a master musician who devotes his passion to nurturing the next generation as a professor of medieval and Renaissance music ensembles and vocal performance at the Schola Cantorum Basel—Switzerland’s premier educational institution specializing in early music. From its founding in 1979 to the present, the ensemble has continued to perform music from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, and their program curation—which truly showcases the unique talents of these masters—is truly impressive.
