Fabio Biondi is one of the world's finest baroque violinists in the world of Italian ancient music. This recording from Glossa follows on the heels of "Diary of Chiara (GCD 923401)" and "Vivaldi - Farewell Concertos (GCD 923402)," both recorded with Europa Galante. In this third volume, the orchestra of the Norwegian city of Stavanger is shaken to portray Caldara's masterpiece, "The Death and Burial of Christ"! Antonio Caldara (c.1671-1736), who was born in Venice, spent his career in Mantova and Rome, and then served as Deputy Director of the Court of the Holy Roman Emperor Carl VI in Vienna. The oratorio, "The Death and Burial of Christ," composed for Lent in 1724, is characterized by the rich counterpoint that Caldara acquired in his later years, the variety of instruments available to the court orchestra, and a wealth of arias with instrumental obbligato.The instrumental parts feature works from Caldara's Italian period, Vivaldi's sonatas, and works by Fuchs. The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra's ancient music program was forged by France Bruchen and Philippe Herreweghe, and since 2006 has been carried by Fabio Biondi.
