Rossi, Michelangelo (1602-1656)
Description:
A collection of multi-tonal madrigales by Michelangelo Rossi, including an arciograno in 36 keys in one octave! The SCB is a Swiss music academy specializing in the study of ancient music, and the 22nd volume of the "Glossa SCB Series," a collaboration between Glossa and the SCB, features important composers of the Italian Baroque, The 22nd volume of the "Glossa SCB Series", a collaboration between Glossa and the Basel Schola Cantorum, is a collection of polyphonic madrigales by Michelangelo Rossi (1601/02-1656), an important composer, violinist, and organist of the Italian Baroque, who has only recently become well known. While conservative in its parts and traditional counterpoint, Rossi's madrigale has strong avant-garde elements, such as chromaticism and multitonalism, in which more than 12 pitches per octave are used. In this recording, the singers sit around a large table, learning, discussing, and singing to recreate the intimate environment in which these madrigales were sung at the time. (This is also where the album title "Madrigali al tavolino" (Madrigale at the Table) comes from.) The use of an arci organo with 36 keys per octave and a clavemusicum omnitonum (archicembalo) with 31 keys per octave for this music is also a major point of interest. Johannes Keller, a specialist in these instruments, leads the Ensemble Domus Artis, a group formed specifically for the study and interpretation of these madrigales. Its members are young singers of ancient music who have come to Switzerland from all over the world, including Japan, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, and Hungary, and who studied at the SCB.
