Medieval Songs Revived for the First Time in About 1,000 Years The Schola Cantorum Basilea (SCB) is a Swiss music conservatory specializing in early music, known as the leading institution for early music education and research. The latest release for 2018 in the “GlossaSCBSeries”—a collaborative project between Glossa and the Schola Cantorum Basilisiensis—marks the debut on Glossa of “Sequenzia,” an ensemble world-renowned for its specialization in medieval European music. Sequenzia was co-founded in 1977 by Benjamin Bagby and Barbara Thornton, who were students at the Schola Cantorum Basilea at the time. For over 40 years since then, they have been active as an extremely innovative group in the field of medieval music, engaging in international concert tours, producing over 30 recordings, performing in films and on TV, and nurturing the next generation of musicians. The “Songs of Consolation” from 11th-century Canterbury, England, are said to have been sung to the text of “The Consolation of Philosophy” (De consolatione philosophiae), the masterpiece by the ancient Roman philosopher Boethius. Dr. Sam Barrett of the University of Cambridge reconstructed the work from lost manuscript scores, and through Sequenzia’s performance, it has been brought back to life for the first time in approximately 1,000 years.
