Released on The Sixteen's own label "CORO," the series of Orazio Benevoli (1605-1672) Masses performed by I Fagottini, led by Robert Hollingworth, has garnered acclaim in Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine. Following the first installment, 'Missa Tu Es Petrus (COR16201)', and the second, 'Missa Benevola (COR16208)', the long-awaited third and final installment of this trilogy arrives. Orazio Benevoli, who served as Kapellmeister at St. Peter's Basilica in mid-17th century Rome, was a master of the "Colossal Baroque" style, which involved placing numerous choirs in different locations within the cathedral.This album features the world premiere recordings of two polyphonic choral masses: the 'Missa Angelus Domini' (Angel of the Lord) for Easter (3 groups, 12 voices) and the 'Missa Dum Completur' (When the Day of Pentecost Arrived) for Pentecost (4 groups, 16 voices). Unlike the overwhelming "wall of sound" created by densely layered voices found in works by Tallis or Striggio, the defining feature here is Benevoli's signature three-dimensional sound design. Multiple choirs interact, exchanging sounds across vast spaces. Combined with contemporary motets by Grandi and the original Palestrina works that inspired them, this recreates the celebratory atmosphere of 17th-century Rome.
