The Sixteen & Harry Christophers’ “Stabat Mater” Collection features monophonic chants (plainchant), Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757), Claudio Casorlini (1697–1760), and three commissioned works—a timeless program! The young Russian-British composer and pianist Alissa Firsova (1986–), Tõnu Korvits (1969–), whose work reflects influences from the folk music of southeastern Estonia, his homeland, and Matthew Martin (1976–), the rising star of the British choral scene who, after studying at Oxford’s Magdalen College and serving at Westminster Abbey, is now actively engaged at Canterbury Cathedral and Oxford’s New College. A new “Stabat Mater” by these three contemporary musicians from diverse backgrounds and cultures, along with monophonic chants, works by the Italian composer Scarlatti, and Casorini’s “Stabat Mater”—are woven together into a single narrative and historical tapestry through the harmonies of The Sixteen, a group renowned for its wide-ranging repertoire.
