The “Palestrina Project” by The Sixteen and Harry Christophers has continued with Volume 1, “Music in Praise of the Virgin Mary”; Volume 2, “Music for the Nativity”; Volume 3, “Easter”; and Volume 4, “Music for Christmas.” The fifth installment of this project, which pays tribute to the great art of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, has “Pentecost” as its theme, with the main Mass being the *Mass ‘Now Christ Is Ascended into Heaven’*! The “Mass ‘Now Christ Has Ascended into Heaven’” is a paraphrased Mass based on the Gregorian chant hymn “Christ Is Now Ascended into Heaven,” and is included in “Book V of Masses,” published in Rome in 1590—a collection renowned for its many masterpieces. The Sixteen and Harry Christophers have selected three pieces—Nos. 13 through 15—from the fourth volume of a series of motets dedicated to Pope Gregory XIII and based on the Old Testament’s “Song of Solomon.” Once again, the programming—based on thematic concepts and historical context—is superb.
