It has been about 20 years since their first Bach project, recorded in the early 1990s for labels such as Chandos, Hyperion, and Collins. Harry Christophers and The Sixteen are finally ready to present J.S. Bach’s “Lutheran Masses”! Bach’s four Masses—known as the “Missa Brevis” or “Lutheran Masses”—consist solely of the “Kyrie” and “Gloria,” which were central to the Lutheran tradition. Drawing largely from his own church cantatas, these “Lutheran Masses”—born from the composer’s own “recreation” of the music he selected—stand as masterpieces of Bach’s church music, on par with the “Mass in B minor” and the “Passion.” The gentle and noble harmonies of The Sixteen convey the unparalleled beauty of Bach’s music and his profound faith.
