Noted clarinetist Wahwe's second release on the PENTATONE label is Mozart's Basset Clarinet Concerto! The coupling is Henderichs' concerto "Scripture" inspired by "Yoga"! The second release on the PENTATONE label, "Flow" by Anneliene Van Werve, a promising Belgian clarinetist, is a collection of clarinet concertos by Mozart and Wim Henderiks (1962-)! After studying under such distinguished clarinetists as Zabine Meyer, Wenzel Fuchs, Alessandro Carbonare, and Pascal Moragues, Van Wauwe was the 2012 winner of the Munich International Music Competition, known as the most difficult competition of its kind. After making her debut at the Proms in the summer of 2017, she will perform Mozart's Clarinet Concerto at the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall in 2018 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Thomas Dausgaard. Her debut recording on the Pentatone label, "Belle Epoque" (PTC-5186808), was highly acclaimed for its sensitively rich performance.The album title "Flow" was inspired by his love of yoga. The world premiere recording of the clarinet concerto "Sutra" was commissioned to Henderiks. Henderiks is a Belgian composer based in Antwerp. He is also known for his extensive use of electronic instruments (electronics), including "Revelations" (ANTAR-025), a work for soprano solo voice, five-part female chorus, ensemble, and electronics, released on the Antarctica label. The style is that of inspirational healing music, characterized by the addition of electronics alongside the orchestral music. The concerto "Sutra" is a four-movement work based on yoga breathing, philosophy, and meditation. The melody, which makes the most of the range that only basset clarinets can produce, while also incorporating a touch of improvisation, is appealing. This instrument is characterized by its ability to produce a range of up to four lower notes (Es, D, Des, and C) than the A clarinet.Mozart wrote this work for Stadler, a master basset horn player, because Stadler played a basset clarinet that could produce the same range. In recent years, there have been more and more performances and recordings on this instrument, but Wahwe's outstanding performance is not to be missed!
