Description:

A work depicting “bells” with mysterious, addictive sound effects. Emard and Stefanović—teacher and student—team up to record Messiaen’s *The Illusion of the Amen*! The B-side features solo pieces inspired by “bells.” A dream collaboration between two of today’s greatest pianists—Pierre-Laurent Hémard and Tamara Stefanović—has come to fruition! They are releasing the album *Illusion*, featuring Messiaen’s *Illusion d’Amen* for two pianos and solo pieces inspired by “The Bells”! Messiaen’s *The Illusion of Amen* was premiered in May 1943 by Yvonne Loriod (first piano) and Messiaen (second piano). Renowned composers such as Poulenc and Honegger were among the audience members. Emard, who established a direct connection with Messiaen by joining Lorieux’s class at the age of 12, has experienced Messiaen and Lorieux’s performances firsthand on numerous occasions and has long been captivated by the profound depth of this work. This recording was made possible through a collaboration with his student, Stefanovich. From the way the chords reminiscent of bell sounds resonate in the first movement, “Amen to Creation,” onward, the world of Messiaen—as expressed uniquely by these two artists—unfolds before us. The solo pieces included on this album are also truly distinctive: Enescu’s “Nocturne of the Bells,” characterized by its harmonics-like timbre; the poetic “Player Bell Sketches” by Nassen, and “Clock IV” from Bartwistle’s sharp and radical *Harrison’s Clock*—all works captivated by the sound of bells—Stefanovich and Emard invite listeners on a mesmerizing sonic journey.
