The Leipzig MDR Radio Choir (North German Radio Choir), led by Philipp Arman, has recorded the Bruckner and Haydn motets. Bruckner's "This place was made by God," "Christ was obedient," and "Ave Maria" are often heard in concert, but Michael Haydn's (1737-1806) motets are rarely performed, and this is a rare recording. Michael Haydn, the younger brother of Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), succeeded Mozart as organist at the Salzburg court and cathedral, and had a great influence on religious music in the German-speaking world, especially in Austria. This influence is well reflected in Bruckner's motets composed about a century later. In this album, the motets of both composers are combined to provide a unique Austrian style of church music, while at the same time allowing the listener to enjoy the individuality of both composers. He has been the principal conductor of the choir since 2020.The choir has participated in several recordings, including Beethoven's "Missa solemnis" (KKC-5830/ PTC-5186565) and Weber's opera "Die Zauberflote" (PTC-5186788), and this album is their first solo album on the Pentatone label.
