Bostridge Performs with Vogt! Recording Schubert’s song cycle *The Swan Song*. Ian Bostridge—a leading 21st-century lieder singer known for his intellectual approach, versatile and beautiful voice, and delicate delivery. This album, *The Swan Song*, marks the final installment in PENTATONE’s series of Schubert’s three major song cycles, featuring Lars Vogt as his collaborator! Given the high acclaim for Bostridge’s previous album with Pappano (recorded in 2008), anticipation is high for this new recording. *Schwanengesang* (Swan Song), compiled and published after Schubert’s death, is a song cycle consisting of 14 songs based on poems by three poets: Lersch, Heine, and Seidel. From the romantic fourth song, “Serenade,” to the somber thirteenth, “Shadow Play,” this collection evokes deep sorrow and longing. Bostridge’s mature interpretation, coupled with Voigt’s piano accompaniment that seems to cradle the singing, is truly magnificent; this can certainly be called a new classic recording of this song cycle. The B-side features “In Solitude.” Though it exudes a bleak atmosphere, it ultimately leads to a sense of solace.
