The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande led by Knott has recorded Debussy and Schoenberg's "Pelléas et Mélisande"! The world premiere recording of Debussy's symphonic suite arranged by Nott is now available on SACD hybrid disc. The Belgian symbolist poet Materank (1862-1949) published his play "Pelleas et Melisande" in 1893. This tragic love drama has been set to music in various forms, from opera to symphonic poem, by major composers such as Debussy, Sibelius, Schoenberg, and Fauré. Debussy composed it as an opera in five acts, while Schoenberg composed it as a symphonic poem. Both wrote their works based on this play as their only genre. The two works were recorded by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande led by Jonathan Nott. Debussy's symphonic suite "Pelléas et Mélisande," arranged by Knott, is being recorded for the first time in the world! Knott has selected 15 pieces from all five acts. Knott has adapted the actual drama into a symphonic suite. Schoenberg, on the other hand, composed his symphonic poem "Pelléas et Mélisande" between 1902 and 1903. The first performance was given in 1905 by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Schoenberg's own baton.Although the melody of this work is in the late Romantic style before entering the atonal period, there is a great variety of experimentation, including fourth degree harmony, complex counterpoint, and a peculiar form that resembles a symphony in a single movement. This is a masterpiece from Schoenberg's early years, when he showed his creativity, and it is performed with all his might by Nott, music director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande since January 2017, along with his trusted hand-picked musicians.
