Bruckner (1824-1896)

Description:

Recorded by the master recording engineer Christoph Franke! The Berlin Radio Choir, well known for its numerous recordings on the PENTONE label, has recorded the Bruckner and Stravinsky Masses. The Berlin Radio Chorus, known for its numerous recordings on the PENTONE label, has recorded Bruckner's and Stravinsky's masses, both in the unusual configuration of mixed chorus and wind orchestra (a small brass band). This is a remarkable recording of a Mass born from the tradition and innovation left by a great composer! Although Bruckner has a strong image as a symphony composer, he composed a considerable number of religious vocal works, most notably the Mass, as he was the organist at St. Florian's. Mass No. 2 in E minor was begun in August 1866 to celebrate the construction of the new cathedral in Linz, and was finished in November of the same year. The symphony was revised in 1882, 1885, and 1896. The beautiful melody, reminiscent of the slow movement of a symphony, is impressive. On the other hand, Stravinsky's Mass is a neoclassical and anti-romantic work.It is known that Boulanger wrote a letter to Stravinsky expressing his passion for this work. It is said that Stravinsky, who was an Orthodox member of the Russian Orthodox Church, which did not allow the use of musical instruments in worship, wished to have his Mass music used in worship services, and he composed it on his own initiative out of his strong desire for the Mass music. The piece consists of the usual Mass texts, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, and was first performed in Milan in October 1948 by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Micalola under the baton of Anselme. The Berlin Radio Chorus with its principal conductor, Hayes Lehners, sings the masses of both composers in different styles with the utmost beauty. The recording producer is Christoph Franke, who is also known for his recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic. The high quality of the recording is also noteworthy. King International
