Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” needless to say, is a masterpiece that allows listeners to fully savor the essence of program music: the gracefully radiant “Spring,” “Summer” with its masterful depiction of sweltering heat and shifting weather, “Autumn” celebrating the harvest, and the freezing “Winter.” Steinbacher’s lustrous and dignified violin tone invites the listener to experience the changing of the seasons. Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992) was a bandoneonist and one of the leading composers of 20th-century Argentina. Composed in 1969, *The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires* is a work brimming with the sensual, nuanced groove unique to Piazzolla, the “revolutionary of tango.” Steinbacher, who also excels at Latin music, delivers a performance that is bold and full of determination. Although the original work was composed for bandoneon, violin, guitar, piano, and double bass, this recording features the version arranged by Peter von Wienhard for violin and chamber orchestra.
