Description:
Pekka Kuusisto & the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra's new release features the remarkable American composer Murie's "Shrinking" and Philip Glass' "The Orchard" and "Mishima. Pekka Kuusisto (1976-) became the first Finnish player to win first prize at the Sibelius International Violin Competition in 1995. This was the beginning of his career, and he became one of the most popular violinists in Finland, making guest appearances with orchestras and instrumentalists in many countries. During this time, he co-directed a chamber music festival as artistic director with his brother Jákko, and interacted with musicians of other genres, including jazz pianist Iilo Rantala and folk musician Anna-Mari Kajara. He actively engaged in activities to expand the breadth and depth of his "art. His collaboration with American composer Nico Murie (1981-) began around 2010 with "Impossible Things," which Murie wrote for tenor, violin, and strings.Working with Pekka Kuusisto, whom he had heard described as "a creator of rare artistic skill, was an inspiring and enjoyable experience," said Kuusisto, and it led to an ongoing collaboration. His first recording with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, "First Light," for which Pekka Kuusisto will serve as artistic director beginning in 2021, demonstrates the fruits of his collaboration with Murie. Performed on this album are works by Murie that "fuse American minimalism with the English choral tradition, the French emphasis on color and textural beauty, and a sense of long breath and airiness" (Androu Møller), as well as works by Philip Glass (1937-), with whom he once served as an assistant at The Juilliard School, and Philip Glass (1937-), with whom he once worked as an assistant at the Juilliard School. Muiry's "Shrink" was created as a "concerto for violin and strings" late in 2019, around the time "the music and mischief of the last decade reached its zenith" (Kuusisto). It is music in three movements: "pitches"
