Description:
New recordings by world-class performers to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth! Korean composer Yun Isang worked in Germany. Last year, 2017, was the 100th anniversary of his birth, and to commemorate the occasion, a live concert and an album with new recordings will be released. Yun Isang studied in Japan and composed music in Germany, but was abducted and extradited by the South Korean government on suspicion of being a North Korean agent and sentenced to death. He was exiled, however, and became a naturalized citizen of what was then West Germany, where he died in 1995. The highlight of the concerto is a cello concerto played exclusively by Haimowitz. Yun originally studied the cello and was well versed in the instrument, so this is an extremely difficult piece that makes the most of the cello's functions and techniques. The piece begins with his childhood memories and ends with his conflicted dream of unifying North and South Korea, failing to reach the note of la, which represents victory, by a semitone. Haimovitz uses a plectrum to imitate the traditional Korean instrument geomungo in a passionate performance of the chaotic world of passion and despair. The violinist is the young Yumi Hwang-Williams, who is of Korean descent. Japanese pianist Maki Namekawa also gives a fine performance. The orchestra of Dennis Russell Davis, who is a close friend of Yumi's and has been a dedicated performer of her works for many years, also gives a moving performance. King International
