ORCHESTRE PHILHARMONIQUE DU LUXEMBOURG / GIMENO,GUSTAVO
Description:
A gripping and passionate performance! Shostakovich album by the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra led by Gustavo Gimeno! One of the hottest young conductors in the world today, Gustavo Gimeno, born in Valencia, Spain, makes his debut on the PENTATONE label. Jimeno was appointed principal percussionist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2001. He was the assistant conductor to Mariss Jansons in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and made his debut with the Concertgebouw in January 2014 as Jansons' understudy. He made his Concertgebouw debut and became a conductor of international renown. This disc is his full-fledged debut with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he has been Music Director since 2015, and features Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 and orchestral works.A longtime percussionist with the RCO, Jimeno has performed Shostakovich with Jansons on numerous occasions, and even after expanding his activities as a conductor, he has taken up Shostakovich as one of his specialty works. Symphony No. 1 (1924-25), the composer's graduation work from the Leningrad Conservatory. The premiere of this work brought Shostakovich to fame as a composer, and he was hailed as a "genius bred by the Soviet state. Hymeno, a percussionist by training, gives a very crisp performance with an excellent sense of rhythm and tempo. As music director of the prestigious Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra in Luxembourg, one of the three Benelux countries, he will usher in a new era with this orchestra! Please enjoy it together with the Bruckner album (PTC 5186613) released at the same time. King International
