Description:
The most beautiful contemporary choral work! The South Dakota Choral Society's SACD Hybrid Edition of Choral Works. The South Dakota Choral Society's newest release is "A Collection of Chants for Life and Love". The South Dakota Choral Society was founded in 2009 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a state in the Great Plains of the American Midwest. Artistic Director Brian A. Schmidt is a choral conductor who has conducted choirs such as the choir at Duke University Chapel in North Carolina and is considered one of the leading choral conductors in the United States. The "Chants for Life and Love" collection features "religious songs" selected from "the most beautiful contemporary choral works" by composers from the Baltic States, Scandinavia, and Switzerland. The "Magnificat" and "Lord, now you are" from the "New Testament" and "The Gospel according to Luke" by Arvo Pärt, born in Estonia, and the "Seven Antiphonas from the Magnificat" commissioned by the RIAS Chamber Choir in Berlin. Two pieces from Newstedt's "Kierkegaard's Prayer," commissioned by the Norwegian Soloist Choir and sung in English translation of a text taken from the writings of the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard (Kirkegaard). The works of Argildas Martinaitis of Lithuania and Eriks Echenvalds of Latvia are also "life-song" chants. There are two "love" songs. Two "love" songs, "Four Love Songs" by Sven-David Sandström of Sweden and "I am the Rose of Sharon" by Ivo Antonini of Switzerland, are both based on texts from the Old Testament and the Song of Songs (Song of Solomon). Although South Dakota has a dark history of fierce battles between the Sioux and other native peoples and whites, it is now known as a state blessed with tourist attractions, including a national park named after Mount Rushmore, from which the faces of four presidents were carved, and which attracts many domestic and foreign visitors. The state's largest city, Sioux Falls, has a population of 150,000. It is nicknamed "America's Best Little City. The recording session for the album, "A Collection of Chants for Life and Love," took place at one of the city's most famous landmarks, the Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph (St. Joseph's Cathedral). The neo-renaissance cathedral was first built as a wooden church, and was reconstructed in limestone between 1915 and 1919. After several restorations, the last interior was completed in 2011.The cathedral is known for its excellent acoustics and is used for choir concerts as well as one of the concert venues for the Sioux Falls-based South Dakota Choral Society. The session was produced by Blanton Alspaugh, a 2013 Grammy Award winner for Best Producer for his recordings, including the South Dakota Chorus' first album, "In Heaven." enjoy a recording of the quality that Pentatone is known for. Artistic Director Schmidt will be guest conducting in Sweden in the fall of 2015 as the U.S. representative on the International Conductor Exchange Program. King International
