Viola player Jesús Rodolfo has released an album featuring works by three of the 20th century’s leading Russian composers: Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, and Stravinsky. Although the recording was originally scheduled for early April 2020 in northern Spain—Jesús’s hometown—travel restrictions due to COVID-19 made that impossible, so the album was recorded in the United States in August of that year. The works included here—Prokofiev’s *Romeo and Juliet*, Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata (arranged for viola), and Stravinsky’s *Italian Suite*—are deeply moving pieces that appeal to human emotions such as “love,” “death,” and “hope.” Rodolfo’s choice of these pieces reflects his belief that, even in the midst of a severe pandemic, maintaining love and hope is of the utmost importance. Highly acclaimed for his passionate performances, innate musicality, and overwhelming technique, Spanish violist Jesús Rodolfo is a prominent musician described by The New York Times as “a star who shines beyond the stage.” He became principal violist of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra at a young age and has since performed with world-renowned conductors such as Abbado and Pappano.
