Stefan Koncz)* A masterpiece at the pinnacle of the 20th-century flute repertoire, composed while the composer was evacuated during World War II. This recording features an arrangement for flute and orchestra by Stefan Koncz, former principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic, currently a member of the Berlin Philharmonic, and a member of the Philharmonics Vienna-Berlin. This performance showcases Prokofiev’s distinctive lyrical melodies—enriched with greater color through orchestration that sets it apart from the piano accompaniment version—alongside the vibrant energy brought to life by Payu’s overwhelming technical prowess. 《Christopher Raus: Flute Concerto》 One of Raus’s masterpieces, which received its world premiere in 1993. This highly dramatic five-movement work is deeply influenced by Celtic music. It is a dramatic piece in which Raus’s characteristic intense dynamism intertwines with melancholic, Irish-style melodies. Payu’s astonishing breath control and emotionally stirring expressiveness draw out the work’s tragedy and vitality to the utmost. 《Toshio Hosokawa: “Ceremony” (for Flute and Orchestra)》 Composed by Toshio Hosokawa for Emmanuel Pahud, this work is a prayer concerto expressing the hope for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. Comprising five movements, the piece likens the flute to “the tree of nature” or “a human (shaman),” and the orchestra to “the universe and nature.” As indicated by the Greek word “pneuma” (breath or spirit), the performer’s breath becomes the wind of nature, awakening the spirits. The soloist, as a shaman invoking supernatural powers, deepens the song while at times resonating with or clashing against the world of the orchestra, eventually becoming one with nature. Payu’s signature style—“silence, noise, and song”—fuses with the Dresden Philharmonic’s spatial resonance to weave an art form brimming with tension, reminiscent of a ray of light or a ritual prayer.
