It’s true that MF Doom’s vast catalog often speaks to the world around us. But what sets Doom apart from many of his peers, predecessors, and successors is the fact that while most rappers speak about the world as it is, Doom’s work is dominated by a world of his own creation. In 2004, MFDOOM released the masterpiece *MM...FOOD*, leading us into a strange, decadent world. *MM...FOOD* is constructed around food-related metaphors, with DOOM depicting a life steeped in vice, sex, violence, and jealousy with a biting comedic touch. It is a work with a brilliant and innovative structure that gives DOOM ample room to explore the album’s themes. Now, 20 years after its release, it’s easy to see how ‘MM...FOOD’ has become an icon in its own right. Just as DOOM himself has, this album has been cherished as a hip-hop classic. From the influence of this album’s raw, loose production style on modern boom bap and lo-fi, to how his artistry and pen opened up bold new creative possibilities for MCs, DOOM’s work continues to shape the music we listen to today. One of the hip-hop scene’s most beloved antiheroes and a constant innovator, MFDOOM (often simply called DOOM) is widely acclaimed for his sharp, candid rhymes and his choppy, sample-heavy production style. Originally known as ZevLoveX and a member of the short-lived but influential golden-age rap group K.M.D., this MC/producer reemerged in the late ’90s as Daniel Dumile, a persona inspired by the Marvel Comics villain Dr. Doom. He has reinforced his enigmatic presence by always wearing an elaborate metal mask when appearing in public and creating numerous alter egos for specific projects and collaborations. MFDOOM’s music is described as “a fine line between madness and genius.” Unconventional, abstract, unorthodox. These words merely scratch the surface in defining his musical, conceptual, and even rhythmic approach.
