The "Lugano Music Festival" is held every year from April through June in Lugano, in southern Switzerland. Of particular note is the “Martha Argerich Project,” organized by Martha Argerich since 2002. This festival offers not only the chance to hear her perform a repertoire centered on rare chamber music works but also a valuable opportunity to discover the young talents she has nurtured, making it an event eagerly anticipated each year by fans and industry professionals alike. This 2-CD set features Rachmaninoff’s works for two pianos, selected from the many pieces presented in the “Argenteau Project.” The 2009 recording of “Symphonic Dances” in Rachmaninoff’s own arrangement is a performance previously unreleased on any album, featuring a passionate ensemble performance with Argentine-born pianist Nelson Gernner as her partner. For the other pieces as well, Argenteau is paired with notable pianists; for example, Gabriel Montero—best known for his highly idiosyncratic arrangements of Bach—delivers a rich, almost suffocatingly romantic interpretation of Rachmaninoff here. While Argerich is best known for her definitive performance of this work with Nelson Freire, this performance with Montero is fascinating in that it offers a distinctly different approach. Lilia Zilberstein, a leading authority on Rachmaninoff, delivers a solid performance, while Anton Gertzenberg and Alexander Mogilevsky also fully embrace Argerich’s passion. Warner Music Japan
