Poulenc's opera "Dialogues of the Carmelite Nuns," premiered in 1957, is based on the 1931 novel "The Last Woman on the Decapitation" by German writer Gertrud von Le Foll (script by Georges Bernanos). The story is about 16 nuns, each with a different character and way of thinking, including the hero Blanche, a naive coward, her friend Constance, a bright personality, and Marie, a virtuous nun, The songs are interwoven with many chants that Poulenc loved to sing. This performance features some of the finest French singers imaginable today, and is a wonderful visual presentation of what could be a masterpiece of this mysteriously fascinating opera.Although the stage is set with extremely simple equipment and a lot of pale colors with gray as the base, everything is thoughtfully staged, and every moment is so beautiful that it could be a single religious painting.
