Born June 28, 1955 in Elkhart, Indiana, U.S.A., baritone Thomas Hampson won first prize at an audition for the Metropolitan Opera in 1981, then moved to Europe, making his debut at the Deutsche Oper in Düsseldorf, Germany. In 1985, she sang in Mozart operas conducted by Arnoncourt at the Zurich Opera House, and gradually attracted international attention. She has also been active internationally as an opera singer, making her Met debut in 1986 and appearing at the Salzburg Festival in 1988, as well as being one of the best Lieder and Broadway singers. This box, selected by Hampson himself to commemorate his 60th birthday, is a perfect opportunity to hear him at his best. He has a very wide repertoire, and his rich voice and soft, deep, lyrical voice are superb. [CD 1] is from Mozart's Da Ponte Opera.[CD2] is from "Gounod: Faust," "Thomas: Hamlet," and "Verdi: Macbeth. [CD3] is from Verdi's operas. [CD4] is from Wagner's operas and songs. [CD5] is from Britten's "Billy Budd" and "War Requiem. [CD6] is the complete "Winterreise" with piano by Savarisch. [CD7] is from Schumann's song cycle. [CD8] is a selection of songs by Mahler, Liszt, and others. [CD9] is a selection of songs by American composers. [CD10] is from operettas and Broadway. [CD11] is a selection of religious works.
