A truly multifaceted genius! One of the only two albums Marzette Watts (1938–1998) released as a bandleader—his 1966 ESP recording—is being reissued! While attending the University of Alabama in the American South, he was one of the founders of the civil rights organization SNCC. Under pressure from the state governor at the time, he was forced to leave his hometown and moved to New York. It is said that his New York loft was a constant gathering place for a stellar lineup of musicians, including Don Cherry—under whom Watts studied music—as well as Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. Influenced by this environment, he began to pursue music seriously, and this album was recorded during the period when he was traveling back and forth between New York and Denmark, where he was studying music. The lineup features another stellar cast of musicians, including Sonny Sherlock, Baird Lancaster, Henry Grimes, Carl Berger, and J.C. Moses. Despite these musicians—each with such strong individuality—clashing their styles to the fullest, they gradually coalesce into a single, cohesive “form”... The sheer wonder of this performance remains utterly fresh even now, more than 40 years later! Despite possessing such a vast network and immense talent, Watts earned a degree in fine arts and, in his later years, became involved in film and music production and taught at universities—completely abandoning his career as a performer. This unique career path has only added to his legendary status.
