Drottningholm Court Baroque Ensemble

Description:

A new recording by the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble, following Agrel’s *Six Works for Orchestra* (Swedish Society Discofil SCD1189). This album features concertos by three of the most important composers active in 18th-century Sweden—a period often referred to as the golden age of Baroque and Classical music: Johan Hermik Ruman, Henrik Philip Jonsen, and Johan Joachim Agrell. The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble (DBE) was founded in 1971 by violist Lars Brulin to historically research and perform 17th- and 18th-century music on period instruments. Their numerous recordings for labels such as Musica Sveciae and EMI Sweden, as well as their opera performances at the Drottningholm Palace Theater, have garnered high acclaim and popularity for their lively, fresh performances, underpinned by a high level of technical skill. Currently, under the leadership of concertmasters Nils-Erik Sparf and Stefan Lindvall, the ensemble performs 40 concerts a year. Overture from *A Musical Feast*, written by Johan Helmich Roman in 1725 for King Frederick I’s birthday. Johan Joakim Agrell’s *Oboe Concerto in B-flat Major*, featuring graceful melodies in the galant style and a deeply moving lyricism in the “Adagio.” Luman’s “Flute Concerto in G Major,” recognized as an authentic work by musicologist Ingmar Bengtsson and recorded by Emeri Ruus and Hall Baroque (Proprius PRCD2091), is a work brimming with joy. Agrell’s *Harpsichord Concerto in A Major* and Hinrich Philip Johnsen’s *Horn Concerto in E-flat Major* are charming works that have rarely been featured until now. Oboist Ulf Bjurenhed and hornist Hans Larsson are former principal players of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The soloists are flutist Olle Torssander, who studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and Björn Gafvert, the ensemble’s long-standing keyboardist. The solo parts are performed by musicians who know the joy of performing inside and out.
