The Swedish choral group “Erik Westberg’s Vocal Ensemble” was founded in 1993 in Piteå, Norrbotten County, when soloists, church musicians, and music teachers from northern Sweden and Finland came together. The group consists of 16 to 20 members. Together with conductor Erik Westberg (1956–), they have performed concerts and toured both domestically and internationally with a diverse and distinctive repertoire. The ensemble is also active in recording; in 2021, it released Oliyan Fahlström’s suite *Poesis* (SCD1181) for choir and jazz orchestra, and in 2022, the album *Sapmi* (SCD1184), a collaboration with Sámi artists. The new 2022 album *Papillon* commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Hugo Alfvén (1872–1960), one of Sweden’s most beloved composers. It features well-known pieces such as “Evening,” “Mood,” “Butterfly,” and “Christmas Song,” as well as folk songs widely sung in Alfvén’s arrangements—including “Like the Stars in the Sky,” “Lim Lim Lima,” and “On a Ranch Just for the Two of Us”—along with as well as first-time recordings of “Children’s Island Song for Children’s Day,” “The Song of the Thrush” (mixed choir version), “Christmas Hymn,” “Ring, My Beautiful Bell,” “Young Olof and the Fairies’ Dance,” and “The Song of the Dove Perched on a Lily Branch.” This album was produced in collaboration with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s “Swedish Musical Heritage” initiative.
