The long-awaited solo debut album from Caroline Nicholas, “the world’s foremost gamba player”! She weaves together masterpieces from the golden age of French Baroque—by Marais, de Machy, Saint-Colombe, and A. Forclé—in an intimate dialogue with the theorbo. France from the late 17th to the early 18th century was the most prolific era in the history of the bass viol (viola da gamba), giving rise to numerous masterpieces of unparalleled beauty. This album marks Caroline Nicholas’s landmark solo debut, focusing on the viola da gamba repertoire of the Golden Age of French Baroque. In contrast to the assertive Italian tradition, French viol music emphasizes intimacy, nuance, and restrained expression. To bring out this aesthetic to the fullest, Nicholas has deliberately avoided a full-bodied basso continuo ensemble on this album, choosing instead to be accompanied solely by her husband, theorbo player Kevin Payne. The theorbo’s complementary tone creates a delicate ensemble that feels like an intimate dialogue. At the heart of the program are the masterpieces of Marin Marais, the master who established this genre. These are juxtaposed with “Prelude” by De Mas, who is also known as an educator; the intricate “Chaconne” by Saint-Colombe, Malet’s teacher; and “Suite No. 1” by Antoine Forqueray, whose wild and passionate style stands in stark contrast to Malet’s. The program is structured to highlight the individuality of each composer. Caroline Nicholas A rising star among viola da gamba and cello players, active across a wide repertoire spanning from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Hailed as “one of the finest gamba players active today,” she is highly regarded as a musician whose interpretations combine rich emotional expression with a historically informed approach. To deepen her knowledge of early music, she studied with Phoebe Karai at The Juilliard School and with Christoph Cowan and Paolo Pandolfo at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. She has performed with leading early music ensembles such as The English Concert, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and has collaborated extensively with leading figures in the early music world, including Jordi Savall, William Christie, and Christian Bezaidenhout. She is currently based in New York and serves as the artistic director of “Ars Poetica.” Having won the Juilliard School’s Historical Performance Concerto Competition and made her solo debut at Alice Tully Hall, this marks her landmark first solo album.
