Description:
A new large-scale religious work by Canadian composer Christopher Tyler Nickel (1978-), who specializes not only in works for the concert hall but also in music for film, television, and theater! Nickel has previously released a "Requiem" and a seven-hour oratorio, "The Gospel According to Mark," and this work also has a unique melancholy, deep spirituality, and meditative sound. The majestic chorus and delicate orchestration, interwoven with elements of medieval music and chant-like melodies, create a timeless sound. Nickel's characteristic attention to instrumentation also stands out, with a quartet of oboes appearing in both works. Along with the oboe and cor anglais, the rarely heard oboe d'amore and bass oboe are used, and in the "Mass" a pair of Wagner tubas are featured. Conductor Clyde Mitchell and his ensemble of performers have given excellent performances of past Nickel works and have been highly praised for their "emotionally stirring performances" (The WholeNote).
