The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS), founded in 1963, is the world's premier youth orchestra and one of the finest youth programs in the country. Together with Michael Lepper, who now serves as Music Director, all the staff and musicians banded together while separated from each other in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and finally realized their debut recording. Released to coincide with the 135th anniversary of the birth of Florence Price (1887-1953), known as America's first black female composer, NYYS' first studio recording features three African American women, Florence Price, Valerie Coleman, and Jessie Montgomery This highly significant program includes works by three African American composers, Florence Price, Valerie Coleman, and Jessie Montgomery.Price's Ethiopia's Shadow in America, a history of black slavery and discrimination in America, is the first recording by an American orchestra. The Piano Concerto, featuring African-American female pianist Michelle Cann as soloist, is the world premiere recording of the newly discovered original version. She also handled the New York and Philadelphia premieres of the same piece. Grammy-nominated flutist and composer Valerie Coleman's "Umoja" (Swahili for unity), composed for female chorus and reworked for orchestra, features a version by NYYS alumna Jesse Montgomery's colorful, symphonic single-movement work, "Soul Force," takes its title from a passage in Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
