Charles Owen List: “Year of Pilgrimage,” Year 1! He studied music at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London and studied under Irina Zaritskaya and Imogen Cooper at the Royal College of Music. Charles Owen is a British pianist active on the international stage who won the Silver Medal at the Scotland International Piano Competition in 1995. Having already recorded works by J.S. Bach, Brahms, Fauré, and Rachmaninoff for the Avie label to great acclaim, Owen has now taken on Franz Liszt’s *Years of Pilgrimage*, Year 1! Owen says he first heard this work performed by Alfred Brendel when he was a teenager and was deeply moved by its splendor. “The Alpine landscapes Liszt encountered on his travels in the 1830s—the awe-inspiring mountains, meadows, lakes, and valleys—are all expressed in exquisite music in his *Years of Pilgrimage*. In the spring of 2020, during the first lockdown, I was particularly drawn to this music’s power to evoke nature, as well as its sense of beauty and liberation. Against the backdrop of this unexpected confinement at home, the imagery of travel took on a special meaning for me.
